This Is The Only Dog Breed In The World That Doesn't Bark (But It's Not Silent)
If you thought all dogs barked, think again. The basenji is the only dog breed in the world that doesn't bark. However, just because these pups don't communicate in the conventional way doesn't mean they don't express themselves vocally. This breed of pup makes a unique noise "between a chortle and a yodel," per the American Kennel Club (AKC).
The reason basenjis don't make the typical barking sound we have come to expect of dogs is largely due to their physical anatomy. "Due to the shape of their larynxes (voice boxes), they actually can't bark in the traditional sense like other breeds," Shauna Walsh, a Vet Nurse, told Country Living. So, even though they might not technically bark, if you're in search of a pet that's completely noiseless, a basenji most likely isn't the solution. However, if the thought of yodeling canine companion intrigues you, consider adopting a basenji.
Basenjis have a long history
Basenjis are one of the oldest AKC-recognized breeds. They have roots in ancient Africa, and bear a similar appearance to some of the very first domesticated dogs. These dogs were held in high esteem during this period, and presented as presents to pharaohs in ancient Egypt. Later on, they lived "as a semi-wild dog" long before becoming domesticated, and were praised by tribesmen for their great hunting capabilities.
In 1895, a breeding pair of basenjis made the journey to England, but died shortly after arriving. A second duo arrived in England in 1937, with high intrigue and fascination from the public about this unfamiliar and unusual dog breed. However, only the male of the pair ultimately survived. A breeder in Boston, who had just acquired a female basenji, eventually obtained that surviving male, and thus the breed made its first appearance in the U.S. Today, basenjis aren't too common, not cracking the top 20 most popular dog breeds in the U.S., but ranking 81st on the AKC's most popular breeds of 2023 list.
Basenji traits and personality
Along with their unique sounds, the basenji possesses physical attributes that stand out from other dogs. A small breed, with males averaging 24 pounds and females 22 pounds, one of the basenji's most distinguishing features is its curled tail. Despite their smaller stature, basenjis have strong bodies that vary in shades of red, black, tan, and brindle. While their fur colors may diverge, all basenjis have a white chest, tail tip, and feet.
Basenjis are very active dogs who enjoy a variety of physical activities, so if you are someone who tends to favor a similar lifestyle, this bark-less breed may just be your perfect match. Basenjis are also intelligent pups, requiring dog mental exercises alongside their physical routines. They enjoy being around their humans, and if left alone for long periods of time, they might unleash their yodeling voice.
Another unique feature of this special breed is their cat-like behaviors, especially in their grooming practices. Because of their very thorough cleaning habits, these clever dogs don't require much grooming from their owners. With the right products, occasional bathing of these dogs will be much easier compared to other breeds who may require more extensive efforts.
