Easily Remove Pet Hair From Furniture With An Unexpected Household Tool

Living with pets means battling the constant incursion of fur. From furniture and rugs to those hard-to-reach nooks, dogs and cats seem to shed everywhere, making daily pet hair removal a non-negotiable part of ownership. While specialized vacuum brushes and endless lint roller sheets are popular go-to solutions, they often prove costly, disposable, or inefficient for daily upkeep.

However, with a little ingenuity, you can stay on top of your pet hair removal labors with relative ease by making use of an unexpected tool: the squeegee. Across TikTok, many pet parents have co-signed the tool as a lifesaver for keeping pet fur at bay. And it's easy to see why: This household staple offers a practical and eco-friendly way to stay on top of pet hair cleanup without breaking the bank — or the planet.

The unexpected hero: A squeegee

Though traditionally used to clean windows or shower doors, a squeegee's rubber blade can work similarly to remove dog hair from fabric surfaces. As demonstrated by TikTok user Neat Caroline, simply drag the tool across the area you wish to clean in repeated, small strokes.  Make sure you're applying a bit of pressure to really get into the surface. As the tool's edges move against the upholstery, it yanks at the individual fibers, physically pulling the hair out so you can gather it into a single ball for easy cleanup.

According to fellow pet parents on TikTok and Reddit, the squeegee method works on everything from couches to comforters. Best of all, it's relatively cost-effective. You can pick up a Squeegee by Amazon Basics for under $20. Moreover, unlike lint rollers, its reusability also reduces waste, making it an excellent option for those prioritizing sustainable living.

However, some pet parents on Reddit have pointed out that the squeegee method may not work for longer hair. One user noted that the tool has a limited range of motion, which can make getting into hard-to-reach crevices challenging. Thankfully, fellow pet parents offered some solutions. Pressing the area with a rubber glove or a damp washcloth can create the friction needed to remove hair from small areas.
