Meet The Dog That Made It To The Top Of An Ancient Pyramid In Egypt

Dogs often put themselves in situations that have you looking twice. Whether it's jumping on the counter to standing on their hind legs, there's no denying that canines are willing to take some risks. However, the last thing you'd expect to see is a dog walking across of one of the ancient wonders of the world. But that's exactly what sports athlete and canine enthusiast Marshall Mosher encountered during a paramotoring excursion over the Giza pyramids. In October 2024, Mosher, along with Alex Lang, who filmed the unexpected sight, caught an aerial view of a canine skirting across the peak of Khafre, which stands at nearly 500 feet tall. Following the event, Mosher uploaded their findings to YouTube and TikTok. The internet soon took notice of the video, with the latter going viral within a few days.

Mosher later explained to CNN Travel that the sight of the dog initially left him worried, but that he ultimately felt confident in the dog's ability. "If he got himself up, he can get himself down unless he found some secret portal that helped him teleport to the top of the pyramids," he told the outlet. Luckily, when he checked for the dog the next day, it seemed to have made its way back to the ground safely. However, this begs the question, how exactly did the pup get up there?

It's likely that the pooch seen on top of the pyramid is one of the many strays that live around the area. Neither Mosher nor any witnesses were able to verify what type of breed the canine was. Though pyramid climbing isn't a typical behavior of stray dogs, these pups certainly seem to enjoy it. Lang noted to the Washington Post that seeing the canine atop the pyramid created "a feel-good story — a dog, happy, barking at birds, enjoying the view."

What happened to the pyramid dog?

Although it remains unclear what happened to the dog seen on top of the pyramid, the story still has a happy ending — at least for one of the puppies that roam the ancient site. Marshall Mosher decided to adopt one of the local strays, which he named her Anubi, after the dog-headed god and protector of the pyramids, Anubis. Mosher is also using his fame from the viral video to raise awareness about the dogs and Chance Animal Rescue, a group dedicated to helping them find homes.

The large number of stray dogs roaming the pyramids has also caused some concern with preservationists, who worry that the strays and other wildlife could damage the structures. The pyramids are already off-limits to humans, helping to limit destruction. Luckily, groups such as Chance Animal Rescue are working hard to find homes for these strays so they can spend their time dreaming of pyramids from comfy homes instead. Perhaps this viral canine will also inspire the name Anubis to become one of the top unusual and unique dog names.
