Meghan Markle's Beloved Beagle Guy Dies And Her Tribute Has Pet Parents Crying Along With Her

On January 7, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, shared that her cherished beagle, Guy, had died. A heartfelt statement accompanied the announcement on Instagram, along with several photos and clips of Guy's time with Markle. "He was with me at 'Suits,' when I got engaged, (and then married), when I became a mom....he was with me for everything: the quiet, the chaos, the calm, the comfort," she wrote. "I have cried too many tears to count."

Pet parents have responded to the statement with an outpouring of condolences and well wishes for the duchess as she and her family mourn her companion's passing. "It's always heartbreaking to lose a beloved pet," said a a commenter on People.com. "May their memories of Guy carry them through these tough days and hopefully, in the future, the memories will turn into smiles instead of tears." Another user wrote on Bluesky, "Losing a pet is like losing a piece of your heart. Guy seemed to be a loyal companion and filled with love. Those memories will always shine bright. Sending strength to Meghan as she remembers all the joy he brought into her life."

While Guy isn't a typical royal cat or dog name, perhaps, in time, it will become just as beloved as Markle's beagle was. The adored rescue pup will leave me more than just this legacy behind.

How Guy's story can help other pets in need

Meghan Markle ended her touching tribute to Guy with #adoptdontshop, helping to raise awareness for pets in need at shelters across the world. Markle adopted the beagle in 2015 from a dog rescue in Canada after he'd wound up in a Kentucky-based kill shelter.

Guy's adoption tale was adapted into a children's book titled "His Royal Dogness, Guy the Beagle: The Rebarkable True Story of Meghan Markle's Rescue Dog." It covers his journey from the wilds of Kentucky to living with the duchess. Not long before his death, Guy was one of the dogs that appeared in Meghan and Harry's family Christmas card.

Are you ready to adopt a dog? You can honor Guy's memory and follow in the duchess' footsteps by bringing home one of the millions of canines who end up in animal shelters every year in the United States.
