Why You Should Never Feed Your Dog Avocado

Some dogs will eat just about any food they come across, especially if it's sweet. However, that doesn't mean they should. While there are many fruits and vegetables that are safe for dogs and provide health benefits, including apples, blueberries, cooked sweet potatoes, and green beans, others are toxic or otherwise dangerous for them. Avocados are on the list of foods dogs can't eat, so regardless of how much your pup begs with their eyes as you prep your guacamole, don't give in.

Avocados contain a natural fungicide called persin that can pose a threat to dogs as well as birds, horses, and rodents if ingested. This fungicide is found in the fruit, pit, leaves, and bark of the avocado plant. If you have avocados growing in your yard or home, make sure your dog can't access them. This is especially important if your canine companion likes to chew on things that aren't toys.

Although the toxicity risk for dogs is mild compared to that of other animals, it's best not to take any chances. As avocados also contain a high fat content, avoid feeding this fruit to your pooch altogether. Consumption may still lead to unpleasant and potentially serious symptoms.

Avocado ingestion side effects and other dangers

A small amount of avocado flesh likely won't harm your dog, but a larger amount might. Your pup may start vomiting or develop diarrhea as a result of eating too much of the green fruit. The high fat content can also lead to weight gain or canine pancreatitis — a potentially fatal condition. If your dog consumes an excessive amount of avocados over a long period, they could even develop congestive heart failure.

Another factor to consider with avocados is the potential choking hazard. A big dog that grabs a whole avocado and eats it will eventually find the giant pit in the center. If they try to swallow it, it could get lodged in their throat and cause them to choke. This may force you to have to intervene or make an emergency visit to the vet. With all the risks considered, keep avocados out of your dog's reach.
